Replacing The Rear Brake Pads (cont.)

Pad Shims

Replacing the Pads

As we saw last month, there are pad shims which need to be coated with lubricant. Back here, things are simpler. There are only two shims, and you'll have to lubricate the inner side of each.

Next, assemble each pad/shim set, and place them on the caliper bracket. As with the front brakes, the pad with the wear indicator goes inboard.

Then, reinstall the caliper over the caliper bracket. If it doesn't fit, rotate the piston another 90° clockwise.

Once the caliper fits over the pads, tap it into place until the holes for the caliper bolts are lined up.

Reinstall the caliper bolts and torque them to 17 ft-lbs. Reinstall the caliper shield and tighten the bolts snugly.

Bleeding the Brake

Bleed the Brake

To bleed the brake, get a helper and use the same procedure as for the front brakes. Open bleeder, depress pedal, close bleeder, release pedal.

When there are no more bubbles, you're finished.

If you want to bleed all the brake lines, follow this sequence: 1) right rear, 2) front left, 3) rear left, and then 4) front right.

Finally, replace the wheels, lower the car, torque the lugnuts to 80 ft-lbs (in a criss-cross pattern) and road test the car.

Now you have the satisfaction of knowing your pads were replaced properly.
